“Rishikesh is a very holy place for Indian people. One of the Masters of Quan Yin Method, Kirpal Singh of Beas, He was also meditating there for six months before He came out to teach the world. So, I was there too.” Known as “The Gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas” and “The Yoga Capital of the World,” Rishikesh holds a special place among spiritual seekers. Rishikesh is deeply connected to Hindu mythology and beliefs. Thus, the area known as Hrishikesh eventually evolved into the widely recognized name of Rishikesh, the revered abode of Lord Vishnu.

Among these, Bharat Mandir, located in Rishikesh, is a significant Hindu temple. It holds immense historical and religious importance, believed to be one of the oldest in the region, standing at the city’s center. Akshaya Tritiya, an annual spring festival celebrated by Jains and Hindus, is the only day that Lord Vishnu’s feet are uncovered. On this occasion, pilgrims come to make 108 parikramas, or devotional rounds, around Lord Vishnu.

Another of the most revered religious centers near Rishikesh is Neelkanth Mahadev Temple. During the auspicious months of Shraavana, from July to August, and the Shivaratri Festival, from February to March, thousands of pilgrims visit this beautiful temple, offering prayers to Lord Shiva. A landmark of Rishikesh is the pure and sacred river, the Mother Ganges, which carries waters from the majestic Himalayas.

During a lecture in November 2018, our most beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan) shared a beautiful memory of Her time in Rishikesh. “At that time, I was in Rishikesh, and I lived in a little mud house. Yeah. Life was really cool. I was happiest at that time. […] And in that kind of area, you are free. So, they are sincere, their heart is pure. Many Masters went there. So, the energy is just very light, simple.”
