Sant Kirpal Singh Ji Maharaj was an enlightened Master of Surat Shabd Yoga, the yoga of inner Light and Sound Current, a path leading directly to God. Like His name, meaning “Lion of Mercy or Compassion,” the venerated Master was regally mighty and immensely humble, devoting His every moment to uniting humanity with God. Born in a Punjab village in Rawalpindi district, in 1894, Sant Kirpal Singh Ji Maharaj began His devotional journey at an early age. Even as a child, the spiritually gifted Sant Kirpal Singh Ji was drawn to solitude and contemplation. During His meditations, a four-year old Sant Kirpal Singh Ji would encounter “visions of inner Light and many wondrous scenes of one inner stage or another.” A year later, He became vegetarian. He explained to His father: “Is not meat dead flesh, and would you have me make a burial ground of my body?” At the age of 12 or 13, inspired by Sri Ramanuja after reading the famous Saint’s biography, Sant Kirpal Singh Ji vowed that if He should ever gain any spiritual wealth, He would give and give unreservedly, and that He would not mind going to hell for the multitudes to get salvation. From childhood to the time that He met His Guru, Sant Kirpal Singh Ji Maharaj was preoccupied with two things: His wish for union with God and a burning desire to understand the enigma of life. So, He delved repeatedly into questions like, “What is life?” and, “Who am I?” Sant Kirpal Singh Ji believed that the soul could not know peace until the mystery of life is solved. When Sant Kirpal Singh Ji was in His twenties, His father had severe stroke. Under Sant Kirpal Singh Ji’s faithful and attentive care, His father recovered. This pleased His father exceedingly, so he said: “Kirpal, ask for anything you want.” When Sant Kirpal Singh Ji said that His sole wish was to attain communion with God, His father answered, “If a father’s blessing has any effect, you shall certainly meet God.” After that, Sant Kirpal Singh Ji Maharaj began having inner visions of His future Master, Baba Sawan Singh Ji. “He would speak to me and lead me into the higher planes.”
