The central idea of biomimicry is that the strategies nature has adopted have evolved and succeeded over billions of years. These time-tested patterns and approaches have already solved many of the issues that we are addressing today. In 1997, the Shinkansen train nose was changed from the shape of a bullet to something which closely resembles a kingfisher’s beak, then a faster, cleaner and quieter Shinkansen electric train was born. By mimicking the shape of lotus leaves’ surface, one can create a paint for a building that has similar self-cleaning effect.
