The government of Australia announced an extra US$17 million for emergency aid to Sri Lanka in response to the acute economic crisis in the island country. The situation in the nation has worsened with the collapse of the tourism-dependent economy as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Up to now, Australia has provided US$51 million to Sri Lanka through UN agencies for essential support for vulnerable people, including women and children. World Meteorological Organization (WMO) foresees ongoing La Niña weather patterns for 2022.
The WMO recently forecasted that La Niña will continue until the end of 2022, resulting in an exceptional “triple dip” or three consecutive years of La Niña conditions – a first in this century. The rare weather event is predicted to exacerbate both drought and flooding in different parts of the world. The phenomenon, which is generally associated with cooler weather around the equatorial Pacific region, triggered heat in other places in 2021, one of the seven warmest years in history. Above normal temperatures are still in the forecast for the remainder of the year, which includes most of the Northern Hemisphere, and an ongoing drought in the Horn of Africa, that is threatening the lives of millions of people. Such alarming news, World Meteorological Organization, on the record high temperatures generated from the cooling La Niña effect. Extinction of dinosaurs possibly caused by multiple asteroids.
Scientists recently discovered what has been named Nadir crater, measuring around 8.5 kilometers wide and located about 400 kilometers off the coast of Guinea, West Africa, in the seabed of the North Atlantic Ocean. Geologist Dr. Uisdean Nicholson shared that seismic data advances the theory that the Nadir crater was formed around 66 million years ago, which corresponds with the timeframe of the extinction event of dinosaurs. Co-author of the study, research scientist Dr. Veronica Bray, performed computer simulations that suggested that the asteroid hitting the sea at that time would have caused a giant tsunami over 900 meters high and an earthquake of a magnitude of more than 6.5. The findings propose multiple such asteroids contributed to the dinosaurs’ extinction. Thank you, noble scientists, for this discovery. UK scientists invent floating artificial leaves to synthesize clean fuel.
Researchers from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom have designed extremely slim, flexible devices that create energy from sunlight and water, using principles drawn from the process of photosynthesis in plants. The artificial leaves, which resemble natural ones, were produced by placing light absorbers onto lightweight substrates and coating them with water-repellent carbon-based layers. The leaf-like devices can create an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines called syngas or synthetic gas from carbon dioxide, and are also able to split water into hydrogen and oxygen! It is hoped that this technology will be applied to power cargo vessels, thus greatly reducing the use of fossil fuels globally. Twin sisters help save a passenger’s life during a flight.
When traveling from Boston to Fort Myers, USA, a passenger was found unconscious in the restroom. Flight attendants called for assistance and twin sisters Lindsay Byrne, a firefighter and paramedic, and Nicole Kelly, a traveling and emergency room nurse, immediately rushed over. They heard a blood sugar monitor beeping, indicating the patient was diabetic. With limited resources, the sisters quickly put sugar in the patient’s mouth, which helped her regain consciousness. Both of them then stayed with the passenger until the plane landed, where ground paramedics were waiting. Their heroic act was applauded by the airline and the Massachusetts fire department. Being in the right place at the right time, the sisters stated that they were happy to have done something with a positive outcome. We pray for the passenger’s good health. Sanctuary in Canada offers healing for humans and protection for animal-people.
An animal-person refuge in Bradford, Ontario, called the Wishing Well Sanctuary, has been rescuing and saving farmed animal-people while providing a place for humans to reconnect with nature and themselves. Founded by vegan Brenda Bronfman, Wishing Well presents daily programs to visitors such as yoga sessions with sheep- and llama-people, and overnight stays at their onsite accommodation. The non-profit sanctuary is home to some endearing personalities, like a peacock-person named Blue, goat-, geese-, chicken-, alpaca-, sheep-people and more. Ms. Bronfman hopes to expand her work within the sanctuary to include more mental health programs, implementing art, music, and horticulture to help those dealing with anxiety and depression.
