Bishop Desmond Tutu always believed that nonviolence is the way to peace. He even once stopped people from taking the life of a person thought to be the government’s informant during a funeral, calming the crowd and reminding them of “the need to use righteous and just means for a righteous and just struggle.”His vocal movement to end the apartheid policy gained international traction, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. Speaking up for LGBTI+ rights, Archbishop Desmond Tutu declared he would not worship a God who is homophobic.Archbishop Desmond Tutu also made his first major statement on animal-people welfare, stating: “I have spent my life fighting discrimination and injustice, whether the victims are blacks, women, or gays, and lesbians. But there are other issues of justice – not only for human beings but also for the world’s other sentient creatures. The matter of the abuse and cruelty we inflict on other animals has to fight for our attention in what sometimes seems an already overfull moral agenda.” “It is a kind of theological folly to suppose that God has made the entire world just for human beings, or to suppose that God is interested in only one of the millions of species that inhabit God’s good Earth.”The Most Reverend Desmond Tutu received numerous international honorary degrees and awards. On December 26, 2021, at the age of 90, Archbishop Desmond Tutu passed on at the Oasis Frail Care Center in Cape Town, South Africa.
