The World Bank approved a US$25 million, 40-year loan with zero interest and a 10-year grace period to assist Grenada in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the number of coronavirus cases has not been high compared with many other countries, Grenada’s economy has been impacted severely. This timely loan, financed from the Internatonal Development Association, is expected to help with enhancing the country’s health systems and safeguarding people’s livelihoods in industries including tourism, agriculture, and small businesses. It will also improve the country’s debt transparency, fiscal management, and climate resilience. Thank you, World Bank and International Development Association, for your assistance. Massive unemployment in Asia Pacific is reported due to COVID-19.
The United Nations International Labour Organization recently estimated that 81 million people lost their jobs throughout the Asia Pacific region due to COVID-19 in 2020. The largest decline in employment occurred in South Asia, affecting almost 50 million people. Wages were also significantly affected, with 22 to 25.4 million additional people who could now be classified as “working poor,” or surviving on less than US$1.90 per day. The report stated the importance of support measures for those most in need. Thank you, International Labour Organization, for this reminder about the economic and social effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, not only in this region but also throughout the world. Scientists develop method that could control lightning.
A team of international researchers have found a potential way to “short-circuit” storm clouds, suggesting that the technique could be used to guide lightning and prevent it from striking forests, buildings or infrastructure. The lab tests involved a low-powered, hollow laser beam, which is bright on the edges and dark in the middle. When it is shone into the air, particles are heated up, which then causes a controlled electrical discharge into a predetermined, safe region. The team believes that in the future, the same technology could also have medical applications such as in non-invasive surgery. The study has been published in the journal Nature Communications. United States, a Shining World Leadership Award for Compassion laureate, provides funding for green hydrogen.
As part of a US$128 million allocation to sustainable transportation, research and development, the US Department of Energy announced US$33 million in funding for the further advancement of green hydrogen technology. The liquefied gas can be used to power next generation vehicles and trucks that have no emissions apart from water. Most of the funds will be distributed to projects covering areas such as enhancing the performance of high-temperature electrolysis, domestic manufacturing of related components, improving processes of waste and biomass conversion into hydrogen, and fuel cells to be used in heavy trucks. Way to go, United States Department of Energy, on your wise investment. We look forward to the mass adoption of zero-emissions power within the development of eco-friendly economies.
France shortens citizenship process for frontline COVID-19 workers.
France is expressing its gratitude to migrant workers risking their safety in the face of the relentless pandemic, by granting them citizenship through a process that shortens residency requirements from five to two years. These individuals, who are considered to have rendered valuable service, include professionals in the healthcare sector as well as cleaners and retail workers. Since the announcement of this initiative in late 2020, over 70 people have been granted French citizenship, approximately 700 are in the final stage of the process, and almost 2,900 people have applied. The United Nations World Health Organization has found that migrant workers have been contributing greatly to their host countries during the pandemic. Eat the Change, a plant-based food company based in Maryland, United States, is set to launch its new mushroom jerky across retailers all over the country. The animal-free snack will come in five tantalizing flavors: Sea Salt and Cracked Pepper, Hickory Smokehouse, Maple Mustard, Teriyaki Ginger, and Habanero BBQ. A local family farm provides the main ingredients of organic portobello and crimini mushrooms, including stems that would otherwise be discarded. According to Eat the Change, mushrooms are one of the most sustainable crops produced in the United States. The company was founded by Seth Goldman, who is also chairman of the board of the major US-headquartered vegan company Beyond Meat, and celebrity chef Spike Mendelsohn, whose goal is to create nutritious snacks that are also kind to the planet. European bison is no longer classified as “vulnerable.”
The European bison population, which amounted to only 50 individuals a century ago due to hunting, has recently totaled over 6,200 individuals across 47 free-ranging herds in Poland, the Netherlands, Russia, Belarus, the Baltics, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Romania. In addition to collaborative conservation efforts across Europe, countries such as the United Kingdom and Romania even reintroduced the herbivorous giants in places because of the great benefits the grazing mammal brings to ecosystems. For example, their constant digging, foraging, and scuffing of the forest floor revitalizes living environments in different ways for plants, insects, birds and other mammals. I received continuous messages from You via TV and in my heart saying: “It’s not the right time now.” And I understood the meaning of Your messages after three months when my beloved vegan dad, who wasn’t an initiate, but knew himself as Your disciple and believed in You sincerely, broke his pelvis. Like a candle, day by day, he was melting away, and after one month, he left his body. In that one month that I had to take care of him, although I couldn’t meditate properly, I got energy from Your Supreme Master TV that was always on during that time. I always thought differently about my parent’s death. And although some months back I had this dream about my father’s passing away, I ignored it, and couldn’t believe it would happen so soon. I always thought I would be with him when he was ready to leave his body, but it didn’t happen that way. And at the end of all these things, I have learned to surrender. But when he left his body, it was like the time when I lost my Indian Guru in India. My whole being was filled with pure love instead of sorrow. I always wondered how I could tolerate the leaving of my parents. But Your presence, Your compassion and Your pure love suddenly filled our home. Even my vegan mum can feel this pure love and joy that comes from You. Five days before my dad’s departure, my beloved cockatiel, who was really a part of me, flew away, and that night my mum saw that he was in Your arms. Dearest Tim Qo Tu, I thank You from the bottom of my heart for all of Your sacrifices for Your Supreme Master TV and for all the angels around You who create and air such celestial and uplifting programs for Earth and the Cosmos. I thank You for all Your unconditional love that You give wholeheartedly to all beings and also for uplifting all souls.
