Marla Riley, president and founder of The Riley Farm Rescue, has opened up her heart and home to many animals. Marla receives calls to take in animals most days of the week. The animals that she and her dedicated team of volunteers care for have been rescued from desperate conditions. Zoe was a sheep that had been living in a basement, never seeing the light of day. When Marla took her in, she discovered that Zoe was pregnant. Other animals have come from hoarding situations where they had been inadequately cared for, such as not being provided with sufficient food. And still others are saved from slaughter and brought to this cherished forever home.
“The Riley Farm Rescue saves and rehabilitates animals. We have over 220 animals under our care right now. This is their forever home. So, they do stay with us for the remainder of their lives, where we can provide them with the love and care that they deserve.”
Our Beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai graciously offered the Shining World Compassion Award to The Riley Farm Rescue “plus a US$10,000 humble contribution to assist your life-saving work, with love and gratitude.” The Award letter from Master recognizes the fine work carried out by Marla and The Riley Farm Rescue. An excerpt of it reads, “This Award is presented in recognition of the heartfelt kindness infused throughout your Rescue farm, and its saintly volunteers. The love shown bodes well for our future, representing progress towards an enlightened age of empathy and harmonious co-existence between all beings. You founded The Riley Farm Rescue in 2017 as an expression of your love for our precious, innocent animals. Besides providing a loving home for rescued friends, the 10.5-hectare farm is open to volunteers, gives children the opportunity to meet the gentle two and four-legged residents, holds special educational events to promote the vegan lifestyle, and raises awareness of animal abuse.”
Marla expressed her gratitude and surprise at receiving the crystalline plaque, Award letter as well as gifts of Master’s publications and DVDs. “On behalf of The Riley Farm Rescue and all our volunteers that make our mission possible, thank You so much. Our mission aligns with veganism, so I’m very honored and happy to be a part of this and accept these awards, and am still surprised. Thank You so much.” Marla also spoke about how the US$10,000 gift would greatly benefit the rescue. “Thank You so much to Supreme Master Ching Hai. This means more than I can put into words. We have recently had a lot of ill animals, so being able to pay off some of our ever-climbing vet bills is a sense of relief and we can keep helping more animals, so thank You.”

Research warns global warming causing “unprecedented changes” to oceans.
In the 5th edition of the Ocean State Report, issued in 2021, experts from the Copernicus Marine Service and Mercator Ocean International reveal that the area of Arctic sea ice lost from global warming between 1979 to 2020 is estimated to be six times the size of Germany. Significantly, ocean warming and meltwater runoff have caused a yearly global sea level rise of approximately 3.1 millimeters, leading to flooding and damage in low-lying and coastal areas. The increasing ocean temperature is also impacting seawater stratifications, ocean currents, and the Earth’s cryosphere. Moreover, the absorption of large amounts of carbon has caused seawater acidity to increase by nearly 30%, severely threatening the ocean environment, in particular marine life. My animal friends from the forest send their greetings and kind regards to all the people who are going vegan and helping to save the planet. Here is a little cooking tip on how to make tasty vegan dehydrated pickled cucumber chips. Wash and dry four firm cucumbers. Evenly slice them into 2-4 millimeter pieces. Next, prepare the brine using 60 milliliters of apple cider vinegar and 15 milliliters of sunflower oil. Add 15 grams of salt to the mixture and stir until all the salt is dissolved. Then, place the cucumber slices in the brine and ensure the pieces are completely coated. Leave them to soak in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours only. Now, you need to dry out the pickles on parchment paper in the oven. This process may take anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes if you are using an oven set at its lowest temperature, around 80 degrees Celsius, and longer if you are using a dehydrator or the chips are thicker. You can vary the flavor by adding hot sauce to the brine, or sprinkling the chips pre-drying with cayenne or fresh ground pepper. Ensure the chips are completely dried and cooled down before storing them away. Glass jars are a great place to keep them as the lids seal well. Researchers in Saudi Arabia enhance solar panel’s water desalination capabilities.
In 2019, specialists from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology developed an electricity-generating solar panel that also desalinates water using the excess heat from the collection cells. However, the panel’s operating temperature remained too high, thus decreasing its production efficiency. To improve performance, researchers Wenbin Wang and Sara Aleid used a thinner, more porous purification membrane that lowered the solar-cell’s temperature and improved the desalination process. They also included a special fabric that whisks away the accumulated solids that are the byproducts of desalination. The modifications resulted in an 8% increase in electricity production and the purification of 3.2 liters of water per hour – which is double that of the previous system. French fire personnel use innovative way to detect forest fires.
During the summer of 2021, a fire station in Marseilles, France, floated a large helium balloon equipped with a camera, geolocation system and infrared sensors that can automatically detect fires within minutes of them starting. Fire location coordinates and data were immediately transmitted back to the team, allowing them to promptly determine what equipment to bring to quickly extinguish the flames before they grew. The 13-meter-long balloon was tied to the ground with a cable and hovered around 500-600 meters above the station, from where it could scan a radius of about 10 kilometers in all directions. Way to go, Marseilles fire department, on your project that aided your brave staff in protecting the dignified people of Marseilles and beyond. Bright Australian primary-school student accepted into university to study physics.
Allegra Clarke’s enthusiasm for learning and interest in the science field started at an early age. According to her mom, Kellie Clarke, she was reading chapter books and encyclopedias by the age of four, and teaching classmates about the solar system when she was five-years-old. After taking extension classes and completing senior high school-level mathematics and physics topics by age nine, Allegra asked her parents to enroll her in a university physics course. A New South Wales university responded that it believes she will be successful and would “love to have her,” so she will begin her study this year. Allegra says she is still young so she has a while to decide on a career, but hopes to one day become an engineer, astronaut, mathematician or scientist. We are very happy for you, Allegra Clarke! Universities in Berlin to eliminate almost all meat from cafeterias.
It was recently announced that four university cafeterias in Berlin, Germany, will serve mostly vegan and vegetarian dishes as the number of plant-based students reaches a critical mass of around 47%. There are 34 canteens and cafes that serve students on these four campuses, and according to the plan, 68% of their dishes will be vegan and 28% will be vegetarian, totaling 96% of the entire menu offerings. Dedicated vegetarian and vegan student cafes, such as those operating at Berlin’s Free University, have been highly successful, and the upgraded plan to widely expand the planet-friendly diet has been welcomed by many. Way to go, Berlin universities and students, on your shift to plant-based foods. In the benevolent generosity of Heaven, may your compassionate actions radiate outwards as the vegan diet spreads quickly to all areas of the world.
Saskatchewan becomes eighth Canadian province to ban cat declawing.
On September 12, 2021, the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association (SVMA) passed a new bylaw that prohibits cat declawing, which involves removing the third bone and nail of a cat’s paw to prevent them from scratching furniture or other things. According to the American Association of Feline Practitioners, health risks of the procedure include nerve trauma and acute pain as well as chronic issues such as lameness, neuropathic pain and behavioral problems. Scratching is a normal behavior of cats, which can be happily fulfilled by the caregiver providing a scratching post for the feline friend. Trimming of her or his nails is also a humane alternative to declawing. Thank you, Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association, for enacting this ban and for making caregivers aware of how they can better look after their delightful feline friends.
