European Union (EU) sends humanitarian aid to assist flood-affected Yemenis.
The EU has donated €150,000 to support more than 19,500 flood-impacted people in various governorates in Yemen. These funds will help the Yemen Red Crescent Society replenish emergency relief items such as mattresses, blankets, kitchen equipment and hygiene kits. This contribution is in addition to the EU’s €135 million in humanitarian aid to Yemen in 2022 and part of the €3 million humanitarian delegation agreement with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support its Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF). DREF allows the IFRC to quickly respond to smaller disasters without a formal international appeal. The European Union is a recipient of four Shining World Leadership Awards for Humanitarianism, two Shining World Leadership Awards for Peace, and a Shining World Leadership Award for Earth Protection; as well as a laureate of two Shining World Leadership Awards for Humanitarianism and Shining World Leadership Awards for Compassion, Unconditional World Care and True Caring. United States researchers find cancer risk for those under 50 has increased every generation since 1950.
Scientists from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, USA, have found that the likelihood of getting cancer before the age of 50 has risen over time worldwide. Additionally, the incidence of the condition in the under-50 age group jumped significantly after 1990. The study looked at 14 different types of the disease, including colorectal, liver, breast and more and determined that the likely causes of the rising rates are diet, environmental exposures, lifestyle and the changing microbiome in the body. The researchers also noted that eight of the cancer types were in the digestive system, further indicating the extensive role diet plays. Such saddening news, Brigham and Women’s Hospital scientists, on the heightened cancer risk in younger generations. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan sign ceasefire agreement.
After conflict occurred at their border, a deal was finalized on September 19, 2022, to demilitarize the area and enable about 140,000 displaced people from Kyrgyzstan’s Batken and Leilek regions to return to their homes. His Excellency Kamchybek Tashiev, Kyrgyzstan’s Chairman of the State Committee for National Security, said, “I really hope that today’s signed protocol of mutual understanding… will bring peace to our countries. I am sure that peace is always better, peace will persist and we will always strive for this peace.” His Excellency Saimumin Yatimov, leader of Tajikistan's State Committee for National Security, re-affirmed this sentiment and referred to the two countries as “brother nations.” Tajikistan is a Shining World Leadership Award for Good Governance laureate. Australian researchers discover meteorites containing diamonds possibly harder than those found on Earth.
Scientists from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University and Monash University, both in Australia, have uncovered hexagonal diamonds inside four meteorites in northwest Africa. This finding is significant as diamonds formed on Earth are formed cubically and not hexagonally. Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study has demonstrated that the different carbon-based minerals, namely lonsdaleite, diamonds and graphite found in the meteorites, were formed from the mantle of a dwarf planet that collided with an asteroid billions of years ago. The meteorites are spurring research into how lonsdaleite could be made synthetically to create tiny, ultra-hard machine parts for use in various industries. Schools across Poland have welcomed Ukrainian youth who are living in the country as refugees. Magdalena Mazur, principal of Janusz Korczak School #12, in Kraków, Poland, with 80 of the 450 pupils coming from Ukraine, said, “We open our doors to all children, and we do not differentiate by the country they come from or the language they speak. Quality education is the right of every child, and we do our best to provide it.” Backed by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the school also employs six Ukrainian intercultural assistants and provides psychosocial support and after-school activities. Chef Chris Johnson, a former product developer for US fast food chains Popeye’s and Wendy’s, is now creating plant-based chicken cutlets and tenders for American vegan food startup Nowadays. Mr. Johnson says he wants to develop plant-based alternatives that convince even the most-skeptical meat eaters to take another bite. In July, the company’s vegan chicken nuggets made their debut at selected Whole Food Markets, with more outlets to be added by the end of this year. The meat alternative food business aims to make healthier fast food using simple ingredients that not only taste great but are also better for the planet and its inhabitants. Compassionate family in United Kingdom run haven for beings rescued from animal-people factories.
Laura Whelan from Wirral, UK, established the Whitegate Animal Sanctuary over four years ago with help from her two young sons Jake and Matthew. Operating with the assistance of about 20 volunteers and donations, the 150-plus animal-persons on their farm have been saved from the dairy, meat and egg industries. Those no longer facing an abysmal fate include chicken-, pig-, goat-, sheep-, cow-, turkey- and duck-people. In addition, Ms. Whelan also cares for a number of rescued dog-, and rabbit-persons at home. Big-hearted Ms. Whelan said that she would save every animal-individual in the world if she could. The sanctuary’s social media posts encourage people to go vegan for the animals. Bravo, Laura, Jake and Matthew Whelan, for your love shown to our gentle animal friends.
